A] THE BACKGROUND OF THE AUTHOR/PLAYWRIGHT.
Mr.Raymond Caleb Ayodele Charley was born on 27th March, 1948. He was a Sierra Leonean writer in English and Krio Language. He had his education France and Leads University in London, where he got Master Degree in Theatre Arts. He worked with the Ministry of Education in Sierra Leone. He was a Lecturer in Dramatic Arts at Milton Margai Teacher Training College in Sierra Leone
B] THE PLOT ACCOUNT OF THE PLAY:
It was about a white man that went to a village called Mando, in old Sierra Leone during the colonial era to smuggle diamond. He lied to the people that he was coming to the village to engage in tobacco farming. The king’s adviser, Maligu made the village priest to lie to the people to accept the stranger. The village Chief Warrior did not agree. The white man came, spent money, used hard drug, tobacco and gin on the people of Mando and the king. The warrior killed the white man’s right hand [ PARKER] in retaliation of the priest and he was banished by the king.
SUMMARY OF ACT ONE SCENE ONE
Maligu who was the king’s adviser got a letter from his brother about the coming of a white stranger to Mando. Maligu Kindo the warrior would not allow the white man to stay. Maligu wanted the priest to lies that the stranger was directed by god. He was able to convince the prince. He told the priest that if the villagers accept that they would be rich, the stranger will spend the money on the villagers. He directed Soko to call the people in the morning and tell them.
Soko was supposed to sleep in the cave but he slept in a cosy hut in forest. Kindo and Wara came to the cave. Kindo invited Wara to the cave for the villagers not to see them. He never knew that Soko was still in the cave. Soko came out of the cave, Kindo and Wara went into hiding. Soko beat the drum to invite the people to the cave. But kindo and Wara were surprised and thought something must have happened.
SUMMARY OF ACT ONE SCENE TWO
Soko invited the people to the sacrifice stone. He was carried by four men to the place of sacrifice. King Santigi arrived at the sccene and he was welcomed. The priest got a horn from one of the attendants, drew something from it and gave it to both the king and Maligu to drink from it. Kindo did not drink. He said a servant is not expected to drink from the same horn with the king.
After the sacrifice, the priest told the people that the god told him that a stranger was coming to the village and the people should accept him. He went further that a virgin would be offered as peace sacrifice. The king directed Maligu to receive the stranger and Kindo to move the warrior around. Kindo and Wara discussed their future as lovers. The priest confronted Maligu for talking about the letter that was written about the stranger to the king. Maligu said he did it to make it sweet and get to rid of Kindo.
SUMMARY OF ACT 2 SCENE ONE.
The people assembled in the palace to welcome the whitehead and his assistant- Mr. Parker. He was in the village for two days. The people waited for him but he did not come out. Maligu went to call him yet he did not show up. Kindo became impatient, he sent Boko and Sima to bring the whitehead and his assistant ,Parker. The two were brought to the palace and Kindo commanded his warriors Sima and Boko to flog Parker the right man of the whitehead. He felt the pain and called the whitehead. The whitehead woke up. At this point, the King and Soko went out of the palace. Kindo made the whitehead to pay homage to the king by bowing his head and kissing the ground.
THE SUMMARY OF ACT 2 SCENE 2
Everybody in Mando was drunk as a result of the gin, tobacco and hard drug given to the people.They were intoxicated , the women were seen in every corner having immoral things with men. Kindo came to where Soko, Whitehead and Maligu were sitting, he accused the whitehead of bringing evil to the village. Kindo went to look for Wara, Soko and Maligu told Whitehead that they have taken Wara to his compound. Soko and Maligu suspected that Kindo may send Whitehead away and the money they were making may be stopped. The whitehead told Soko and Maligu that he had a plan to get rid of Kindo and promised to tell them the next day in his place. Soko told Maligu about his withdrawal from the plan when whitehead left. He said he did not trust whitehead. Maligu said he would see whitehead to know his plan.
THE SUMMARY OF ACT 3 SCENE 1
Parker and Whitehead paid a visit to the King in his palace. The whitehead made attempt to convince the king to use goat for false sacrifice to bring peace to the land but the King disagreed. The King insisted on the promises the whitehead made. He told the king to tell the people to work hard for the promises to be realized.
As soon as the King went out, whitehead told Maligu about the diamond business. The tobacco plan was just to deceive them. He revealed his plan to get rid of Kindo. The king came back from talking to his people, whitehead gave the king the hard drug and tobacco to induce him. This gave him the opportunity to tell Soko to carry out the false sacrifice as soon as the people are drunk or intoxicated.
SUMMARY OF ACT 3 SCENE 2:
On the day of the sacrifice, white head sat beside the king and Maligu stood in for the priest. Parker killed Soko the priest and Kindo killed Parker in retaliation. Maligu wanted to carry out the false sacrifice but Kindo cut in and told the king that the person on the sacrifice stone was Parker instead of a virgin girl.
Maligu and White head were able to convince the king and the king banished Kindo for killing Parker. Kindo told the people the evil deeds of White head and Maligu and killed White head before he left.
