PROPAGATION OF CROPS-MEANING AND TYPES- BY INSTRUCTOR EREKATA, O.J.
MEANING OF PROPAGATION: Propagation is the process which plants are multiplied as independent units. There are two types or methods of propagation:
SEXUAL PROPAGATION: In this type of propagation, seeds are used for planting. A seed is a developed ovule which is formed as a result of the union of the male and the female gametes, a process known as fertilization.
ASEXUAL OR VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION: In this type of propagation seeds are not used. Only one parent plant is involved and it simply provides a part of itself for planting. This method is mostly suitable for propagating plants which do not produce seeds or plants that produce seeds but propagation is difficult with the seeds e.g. plantain, pineapple, sugar cane, cassava and cocoyam. There are two methods of vegetative propagation which are natural method and Artificial method.
A] NATURAL METHOD- This involves the use of corms, bulbs rhizomes, suckers, stem.
B] ARTIFICIAL METHOD- This involves the growing of new plants by man from cut portion of the parent plant. Artificial vegetative propagation include cutting, budding, grafting layering etc.
