LETTER-MEANING AND TYPES.
A letter could be described as a written message from one person to another. This is borne out when we cannot meet a person we wish to talk to. Letters are of various kinds which are: Informal, Semi-formal and Formal letters.
[A] INFROMAL LETTER
An informal letter is a letter written to friends and family members e.g. brothers, sisters, uncles etc. It has these features:
[i] address of the writer and date which can be in block or slanting forms .e.g.
BLOCK: 4, Oladele Street,
10th August, 2015.
SLANTING: 4, Oladele Street,
10th August, 2015.
[ii]Salutation: This is the opening greeting e.g.
Dear + first name of the receiver, Dear Ade, Dear Sister Yetunde etc
[iii] The Content/body: This is what the letter is all about. The point raised must be written in paragraph. A paragraph is a group of sentences that centred on one major topic or idea.
[iv] The complimentary close: This is the end of a letter. E.g. Yours sincerely + first name of the writer.
[B] SEMI- FORMAL LETTER
It is a letter written to adult friends such as class teachers, friends of one’s parents, Pastors, Imams etc. it has these features:
[i] address of the writer and date as it is in the informal letter.
[ii] Salutation: it is the opening greeting of the letter.
Dear + title and surname of the receiver== Dear Pastor Adeoye, Evangelist Gbebemi etc
[iii]Content/ body :As in the informal letter, the choice of words is less unique or official. There is an element of respect in the mode of expressions.
[iv] The complimentary close: It is the end of the letter e.g. Yours sincerely + full name of the writer..e.g.
Note that signature is not necessary in this type of letter.
[C] FORMAL LETTER
It is an official letter written to communicate with others. It involves the polite Languages. It has these features
[i] Address of the writer and date as the same format for informal letter.
[ii]Address of the receiver at the left corner of the papers.
[iii] Salutation-Dear Sir/Madam
[iv] Title of the letter
[v] Content/ body
[vi] The complimentary close—Yours faithfully, signature and full name of the writer. E.g.
5th August, 2015.
